Pre-K

A Unique Pre-K Experience

Your 4- or 5-year-old child is special to us!  In our private,  full-day Pre-K Program, our children  learn through a variety of mediums—thematic units of study in a curriculum taught by caring and experienced teachers, field trips and community outings, enrichment programs, and imaginative play outside.

The Manor Discovery Pre-K Program provides your child with many distinctive and engaging opportunities to learn, grow, and discover as they interact with each other, their teachers, and their environment.  Our cozy atmosphere is unique and our caring teachers succeed in helping each child reach their full potential.  Our students enter kindergarten well-adjusted emotionally and socially and well-prepared for all the new and exciting learning challenges they will meet in their new school.

Curriculum & Child Development

Our Pre-K Program utilizes the Maryland State Department of Education-approved comprehensive curriculum called The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool. This curriculum meets or exceeds the standards set by the Maryland State Department of Education.

In our Pre-K Program, the teacher guides the children’s learning in the content areas of Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, and Technology while supporting each child’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development.  The program emphasizes that children learn and grow through engaging in diverse activities in interest areas – blocks, dramatic play, toys and games, art, library, discovery, sand and water, music and movement, cooking, computers, and outdoors. Interest areas are set up, monitored, and modified to enhance the children’s concept and skill development through their work and play. The curriculum content areas are integrated into a myriad of studies and thematic units to engage active learners. The themes include topics such as Under the Sea, Quiet/Noisy, Insects, Questions, Rocks, Yarn & Textiles, World of People, and Maps.

All activities and learning in our Pre-K Program respect and support the developmental stages of the children. Social and emotional development is promoted by helping students cultivate a sense of self, learn responsibility for self and others, and appreciate prosocial behavior. Individual personalities are respected and differences are encouraged. We teach the children to express their feelings in appropriate ways by talking to each other and learning to understand other points of view. Physical development is fostered through gross motor and fine motor activities and play. Cognitive development is enhanced by learning and problem solving, logical thinking, representational thinking, and symbolic thinking. Language development is acquired through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.

Throughout the days and weeks, the teacher documents the developmental progress of each child by writing observations, taking photos, and collecting the student’s work for his or her personal portfolio. The teacher evaluates the child’s progress by using the goals and objectives from The Creative Curriculum® Developmental Continuum.

The talented staff at Manor Discovery make these assessments in order to create activities that are attractive and stimulating to students, so that students can practice and achieve optimal learning and personal success.

Teachers communicate with each family through informal conferences and written reports.
